Earwigs
Earwigs
The earwig, despite its frightening appearance and dreadful name, is actually one of the most non-threatening of the insects. Ranging in size from 3/8 to 1 inch long, the earwig lives on plants. Usually, if they find their way indoors, it is by accident, although they will infest your houseplants.
The earwig is a very good parent, unlike other insects which lay eggs and forget about it. This insect has two long appendages on its tail that look like forceps. While this looks fierce, it is really harmless. The name of the insect is based on the superstition that the bug would crawl into your ears while you slept. A pinch from the forceps does not hurt, and is not poisonous, but the earwig can be a major pest, especially in your garden.
